About Meru National Park
The Story of Meru National Park
Things To Do
Classic Game Drives
Morning and afternoon drives along the Rojewero, Bisanadi and Tana Rivers deliver consistent sightings of elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard and the park's photogenic reticulated giraffe. Open vehicles from Fortunas Resort give panoramic photography angles.
Visit the Rhino Sanctuary
The fenced sanctuary inside the park protects both white and black rhino. A ranger-escorted drive offers some of the highest rhino encounter rates in Kenya outside the conservancies.
Elsa's Grave & Adamson's Falls
Two of Meru's most evocative landmarks. A guided cultural-conservation tour links the Adamsons' legacy to today's protection work — ideal for families and Born Free enthusiasts.
Birdwatching
More than 427 recorded species, including Pel's fishing owl, Peters's finfoot, palm-nut vulture and martial eagle. The riverine forests are particularly rewarding from November to April when migrants arrive.
Picnic by Tana River
Park-permitted picnic sites on the banks of the Tana — Kenya's longest river — make for an unforgettable midday break framed by doum palms and crocodiles basking on sandbanks.
What You'll See
The Big Five
Lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and both rhino species are all present. Meru's lion prides are large and well-habituated, and the park is one of the most reliable places in Kenya to see leopard in riverine forest.
Northern Specials
Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, beisa oryx, lesser kudu and gerenuk — species you rarely see in the southern parks — thrive in Meru's drier eastern reaches.
Riverine Wildlife
Hippo pods, Nile crocodile and a startling variety of waterbirds line every permanent river. Sunset returns past the Rojewero are often the day's highlight.
